Our Story
Located in San Luis Obispo County, Esteem Wine Co’s portfolio is comprised of small production, family-owned wineries from Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, Monterey County. We offer an amazing selection of wines from exceptional producers (people) that are dedicated to handcrafting wines with great attention to detail & quality. These are wines one will find in fine restaurants, specialty retailers, and wine bars. You won’t find these at big grocers or box stores.
Why Esteem? Well, esteem is synonymous with respect. There is a deep respect for everyone that makes this wonderful industry successful. From the people that farm the vineyards, to the winemakers and winery staff that spend endless hours during harvest, and throughout the year to ensure we have great wines to sell, buy, and drink. From the staff in the tasting rooms who are ambassadors of the brands, to the wine directors, restaurant & retail owners, Sommeliers that make these wines a part of their wine programs. It’s really about everyone that makes this industry strong.
Founded in 2014 by owner/wine broker Chris Battles, he is no stranger to wine and food, as well as retail wine. He has worked in fine dining for over 35 years. For the past 25 years has been the Wine Director at one of the Central Coast’s premiere restaurants, Windows on the Water in Morro Bay. The restaurant has received numerous awards for its wine program, menu and service.
In addition to his extensive restaurant experience, Chris co-owned Morro Bay Wine Seller, a retail wine shop and wine bar, for nearly twelve years. His combined experiences give him very unique perspective in the wine industry and sales market. He is certified by the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET) with a Level 3, advanced certificate.
A new chapter: After selling the wine shop/wine bar in 2013, Chris was exploring other sectors of the wine industry. Some great friends who were winemakers had inquired on several occasions “what’s next?”. Finally, came the question that started it all “would you like to represent our wines?”. Since he had been a great supporter of their wines at both the restaurant and wine shop, it seemed be a natural fit. Esteem Wine Co was born with one brand. With the help of some wonderful people in the industry, our brands grew from one to four, and then four to eight. The current portfolio is comprised of twelve producers.
In addition to Esteem Wine Co, Chris is a member of the Rising Star Wine Group team. Their portfolio consists of premium producers from Santa Barbara, Monterey, Napa Valley, Sonoma, and imports.
